Kelly Gooch made a video about the fear of ageing and how makeup shouldn’t have to be about preserving the image of youth, and doesn’t always need to ‘lift’ the face and features.

She also spoke about Jessica Defino’s work, which I found interesting.

Anyone else see this video?

  1. I agree. Makeup is art and should be treated as such. It’s way healthier (mentally) so think of makeup more as self expression than as a mask you have to wear to hide the passage of time. The majority of the time, when I do makeup it’s part of a costume or as an extention of my outfit. I don’t care about covering the dark corcles under my eyes (sometimes I even darken them a bit more). I don’t care about covering pimples (a new one will pop up before too long like fucking whack-a-mole). I don’t care about lines or wrinkles (they’re proof that I’ve lived a life full of ups and downs and kept on going). Makeup should tell a story, not cover up your own.

Her makeup look was beautiful but I think she (and Hannah Louise Poston, in some recent videos) are getting too sucked into specifically tiktok discourse. Many/most of us who wear makeup frequently are working outside the home and we have to rush to get ready. My methods haven’t changed much in ten years because I still like the look, I have it down to a five minute process, and I’m not trying to impress Linda in payroll at 8:30 in the morning. Yes, this is how people end up with a dated style even if they buy a recent release whenever it’s time to replace a finished product. But this recent habit among youtubers of navel-gazing while staring in the mirror and scrutinizing millimeters in cheekbone lift is kinda missing the point and are tapping into a discourse that they don’t seem to realize isn’t very widespread.

I agree that everyone should do their makeup however they want to but I am 54 and I’ve had to change things up as my face changed over the years. You do want to adjust the trends to suit your face. Most of the influencers are younger than me so just adjustments, even colors choices sometimes, need to be made. Makeup being flattering on me is kind of the point for me so I’m a bit lost there.
